A trucker has been arrested in the countryside near Elefsina for allegedly illegally dumping construction waste, authorities said Saturday.
A police statement said the 55-year-old man was taken into custody on Friday after being caught red-handed in a field by members of a special unit against the illegal management and disposal of waste.
He faces charges of breaking environmental regulations.
The once-fertile land round Elefsina, Aspropyrgos and much of western Attica suffered extensive industrialization after World War II, and in recent decades has been widely used for the illegal disposal of all sorts of waste.
