Greece is among the top 10 countries worldwide in terms of the share of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in electricity generation, with percentages that are twice the European average and nearly three times the global average, according to the annual Global Electricity Review by the think tank Ember.
The report analyzes electricity generation data from 215 countries worldwide for 2025: Greece ranks third in terms of solar energy share in the electricity mix, at 22%, up from 20% in 2024. Hungary ranks first with 27%, and Chile second with 25%.
The global average stands at 8.7%, while the EU average is 13.1%. In terms of per capita solar energy production, Greece ranks sixth, with 1,300 kWh annually. Regarding wind energy and its share of total electricity generation, Greece ranks ninth with 20%.
The global average is 8.5%, while the EU average is 17.1%. As noted in the report, clean energy sources expanded fast enough globally to cover all new electricity demand in 2025, thereby preventing an increase in fossil fuel generation.
