Three people have been arrested at Athens International Airport for attempting to smuggle into Greece more than 8,000 packs of contraband cigarettes and three kilograms of tobacco, authorities said Tuesday.

All three suspects flew in from Egypt and were arrested Monday, a police statement said.

The first arrest was in the morning, when a 48-year-old man was caught trying to get through customs with 7,400 packs of cigarettes on which no dues or taxes had been paid.

In the evening, two 50-year-old men were detained – following a tip-off – in possession of 1,102 packs of cigarettes and three kilos of tobacco.
