The public discussion these days is focused on political favors and the cronyism practices of some MPs. However, when populism comes from local government officials, it can be even more damaging. By succumbing to the frustration of the moment, they undermine the long-term interests of the local community. This appears to be the case right now on the island of Lesvos, where, instead of abiding by the established protocols and regulations, irresponsible local leaders are legitimizing extreme reactions.
