Judicial probe after car tumbles into Thessaloniki building site

A Thessaloniki prosecutor has ordered an investigation after ground subsidence during a cable-laying project led to a parked car tumbling into a fenced construction site Monday.

The incident beside what used to be the Papafis stables in the city’s Toumba district reportedly came after a water main was ruptured during work to lay optical fibres by the roadside. A trench subsequently opened up along the side of a row of parked cars and one fell in and down into the adjacent building site, together with the metal sheeting fence.

No injuries were reported.

A man in charge of the cable-laying work was briefly detained, and released pending the judicial investigation.
