A 12-year-old boy suffered a serious injury to his hand when he lit a firecracker that exploded outside a church in Menidi, western Attica, state-run broadcaster ERT reported.

The accident happened outside the Church of Agios Vlasios on Sunday, which was Orthodox Easter in Greece. The minor has suffered a partial detachment in one of his fingers and was taken to the Agia Sophia Children’s Hospital to undergo surgery, state-run broadcaster ERT reported.

The accident happened outside the Church of Agios Vlasios.

A preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Acharnes police department to determine how the minor came into possession of the firecracker.

During Easter celebrations, the persistent use of firecrackers, flares, and improvised pyrotechnics despite authorities’ warnings continues to exact a toll each year. Five people suffered serious burns on April 5th in an apparent accident while preparing homemade rockets for a traditional Easter celebration on the eastern Aegean island of Chios.
