A 19-year-old student diagnosed with meningitis earlier this week in Trikala, central Greece, remains in intensive care, with doctors describing his condition as stable but critical.
The student had traveled last weekend from Thessaloniki, where he is studying, to his family home in Trikala for the Greek Easter. He was admitted to hospital on Monday after experiencing a severe headache and fever. Tests confirmed meningitis, and he was immediately transferred to the intensive care unit, where he remains intubated.
Health authorities say precautionary measures were swiftly implemented. Around 30 healthcare workers from the hospital’s emergency department and a further 10 from the ICU who had contact with the patient have received chemoprophylaxis, in line with standard public health protocols.
Doctors indicate that a clearer picture of the student’s neurological condition will emerge once he regains consciousness.
Meningitis is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition requiring rapid medical intervention, but it is typically not associated with widespread outbreaks in Greece. In recent years, the country has recorded only sporadic cases.
