Two motorists were arrested in southern Athens over the weekend for allegedly racing each other, hitting speeds of over 150 kilometers an hour and manoeuvring dangerously, authorities said.
A police statement said traffic police patrolling the Vouliagmeni area for racers pursued the speeding cars “following all security measures to avert any risk of accident,” and brought them to a halt on the corner of Athinas and Niovis streets.
Police said the suspects were racing early Saturday on roads where the speed limit was up to 70 kph.
The drivers, aged 32 and 19, face reckless driving charges.
Police have stepped up a nationwide crackdown on dangerous driving in recent months, while the government has drastically tightened penalties for breaches of the highway code.
