Former Tempe railway victims’ head advocate launches political movement

Maria Karystianou, former head of the association of relatives of the victims of the 2023 Tempe railway disaster, announced on Wednesday the founding of a political movement.

She did not reveal a name for the party expected to emerge from the movement.

However, referencing a website titled “Starting for Hope – Independent Citizens’ Movement, Karystianou said “this movement was born in the hearts of people who refused to compromise with decay. Today, we start as an impenetrable hope of truth, justice and dignity.”

According to the content appearing on the website, the political movement’s official website is expected to launch soon.

The Tempe railway disaster, which occurred in February 2023, claimed 57 lives after a passenger and freight train collided head-on. Karystianou’s daughter was among those killed.

The ongoing trial of 36 defendants, including railway and Transport Ministry officials, opened on March 23 but was temporarily paused due to complaints of space constraints at the University of Thessaly’s conference center, serving as the Larissa courtroom. It was expanded to accommodate the proceedings.
