The man was found unresponsive in a detention cell at Omonia Police Station on Friday evening. An ambulance crew called to the scene declared him dead, while officers had earlier administered first aid, police said.
Police added that the relevant prosecutor was informed and a forensic doctor attended the scene. An autopsy is currently underway to determine the cause of death.
According to a police statement, the detainee had been taken to hospital at 1.30 a.m. due to illness. After medical examinations, he was re-arrested at 10.10 a.m. the same day and returned to detention.
