The Education Ministry plans to introduce the International Baccalaureate, the two-year diploma program, to five public magnet schools in the next academic year.
It will be the first time the globally accredited program will be offered at Greek public schools. Selected private schools have had it for over two decades.
Education Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis will soon visit the IBO, the international organization administering the program, in Geneva, to meet with its leadership and discuss teacher training in the many subjects offered by IB.
An earlier effort to introduce the IB in public schools, in 1995, had been scrapped because of opposition from teachers.
Targeted at students aged 16 to 19, the program offers an internationally recognized qualification for admission to higher education and is widely accepted by universities around the globe.
