Suspect in Ambelokipi blast case faces trial for 2020 attack on university rector

A 26-year-old man whose fingerprint was allegedly found on a plastic garbage bag found in an Ambelokipi apartment where an explosive device accidentally detonated in October, is one of the chief suspects in a 2020 attack on the rector of the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB).

According to police, the 26-year-old’s fingerprint was identified on a garbage bag containing a CZ pistol that was found in the debris of the blast. The suspect is expected to appear before a prosecutor on Wednesday.

The same suspect, meanwhile, has been accused of participating in a widely publicized attack on the former AUEB rector, Andreas Bourantonis. During the incident, the group allegedly assaulted Bourantonis and hung a sign around his neck reading “Solidarity with Occupations.” They also took photographs of the incident and published them.

The attack sparked widespread outrage and prompted the Ministry of Citizen Protection to announce a €100,000 bounty for the perpetrators.

The trial for this earlier case, in which the 26-year-old is accused of misdemeanors along with other two people, is also scheduled for Wednesday.
