Retail turnover grew 2.4% last year to reach 71.57 billion euros, but the increase in turnover compared to 2023 was below the level of inflation, confirming concerns about the impact on demand from the ongoing lockdown.
Even if in some sectors, such as organized food retail, an increase in sales volume was recorded in 2024, this is largely due to the shift of consumer spending toward food and generally necessary daily living items, from the categories of clothing, footwear and electrical appliances.
The category with the largest percentage increase (35.2%), was that of textiles, clothing and footwear in outdoor stalls and markets.
