Major American airlines, as well as companies from third countries that note the strong demand in the US for travel to Greece, have decided to significantly strengthen their flight schedule during 2025. As a result, this year Greece will have more direct air connections with the US than it has ever had.
This is almost twice as many flights as five years ago, which is also reflected in the large increase in arrivals and receipts from America.
For this year’s peak summer season, airlines have scheduled 103 direct flights to the US on a weekly basis, up from 82 last year and 46 in 2019. In addition, these flights depart from nine different airports, compared to seven last year and four in 2019. At the same time, however, the period during which these flights are scheduled is also expanding, as five years ago they were limited only to peak season.
Delta Airlines has greatly extended its winter season, operating until mid-January and starting routes from early March, while American Airlines and United have also extended their season, now flying until November. Currently, Emirates remains the only airline that operates year-round.
By far the longest direct flight is the one that Norse Atlantic operates between Los Angeles and Athens. Its flight schedule includes four such direct flights each week. Norse Atlantic will also offer seven direct flights to JFK Airport in New York each week.
A new destination to which Athens International Airport will be directly connected from this year is Charlotte, North Carolina, a route that American Airlines will operate daily. Delta also increased its direct flights to and from Atlanta by six, resulting in 13 such flights each week.
United Airlines’ direct flights to and from New York, and in particular to Newark Airport, are also increasing from seven to 10. It is noted that United Airlines has also expanded its schedule in terms of flights from Newark and Chicago, starting three weeks earlier.
With this data, the number of weekly flights connecting Athens International Airport with nine different airports in the US has increased by 25% compared to last year.
