The saga of retroactive payments will continue in court for hundreds of thousands of pensioners, following the decision of the Supreme Special Court (AED), while the government is stressing there will not be a horizontal regulation for everyone. In practice, only those who have resorted to justice and have been vindicated will be paid retroactively.
The compensation of those pensioners who had appealed to the courts by July 2020 for retroactive bonuses and subsidies and are vindicated are being paid on a case-by-case basis, as is the case to date, according to a senior source from the State General Accounting Office.
He clarified that there is no chance of payment for all pensioners – that is, even for those who have not appealed. He recalls that in 2020, with a law that was passed, the Greek government paid 1.2 billion euros for the retroactive payments of the main pensions, while stipulating that this payment extinguishes other claims.
A possible horizontal payment to all pensioners would jeopardize the limit for increasing budget expenditures agreed with Brussels in the framework of the Medium-Term Fiscal Structural Plan 2025-2028, the State General Accounting Office reports.
