Five Overnight Earthquakes Shake Aegean As Seismic Activity Near Amorgos Continues

A series of five earthquakes struck the sea area between Amorgos and Santorini early Wednesday morning, with the strongest measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale, according to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens.

The most significant tremor occurred at 03:14 local time, approximately 24 kilometers south-southeast of Arkesini, a community on the island of Amorgos. This was followed by four additional quakes of lower magnitude—registering at 4.0, 4.6, 4.0, and 4.1—between 03:35 and 04:23, all occurring within 20 to 25 kilometres of the same area.

The latest seismic activity is part of an ongoing pattern in the Cyclades region, where more than 1,100 earthquakes have been recorded since February 1. The strongest of these tremors reached a magnitude of 5.3, according to Kostas Papazachos, professor of seismology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

While no significant damage or injuries have been reported, Greek authorities and seismologists continue to monitor the situation closely, as the region is known for its seismic activity.
