Residents of the Attica region felt the tremors of a significant earthquake that occurred today between the islands of Amorgos and Santorini. The earthquake, registering a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale, struck at 13:26, forcing many to take notice of the ongoing seismic activity in the region.
According to the Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter of the quake was pinpointed 16 kilometers southwest of Arkesini, with a focal depth of 19.4 kilometers. This comes shortly after a 3.7 magnitude tremor was recorded in the same area earlier, which had a shallower focal depth of 7.8 kilometers.

Seismologist Akis Tselentis, addressing concerns on social media, urged caution and emphasized not to be misled by narratives suggesting the seismic activity sequence was weakening. Tselentis highlighted the ongoing activity, referencing a previous 5 magnitude earthquake off Amorgos, and advised the public to remain vigilant.
“Do not believe the narrative that the phenomenon has subsided,” Tselentis warned, explaining that seismic sequences often see increases in earthquake magnitudes following periods of reduced activity. He noted that this current seismic sequence could continue for months and advised following recommended seismic safety measures.
Authorities have reminded residents to stay informed and prepared as they monitor the situation closely, with seismic experts continuing to analyze and predict future activity.
