Inmate Vassilis Dimakis, who was serving a 44-year sentence for multiple armed robberies, illegal gun possession and forgery, has passed away at the age of 46 in Athens’ Korydallos prison.
According to a police statement, he was found unconscious in his cell by fellow inmates. He was then transferred to the prison hospital, where his death was confirmed.
A forensic examiner arrived at the scene to investigate the circumstances of his death, while the area where he was found was sealed off for further examination.
The initial forensic examination indicated that Dimakis had no external injuries.
“On the morning of Thursday, February 7, 2025, a 46-year-old Greek national was found unconscious by fellow inmates inside his cell at Korydallos detention facility,” read the police statement on his death.
“He was immediately transported by paramedics to the Prison Hospital for first aid, but his death was confirmed upon arrival.
The responsible prosecutor was immediately informed of the incident. A Forensic Examiner was called to the scene, and the area where the inmate was found was sealed off for investigation by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
The Piraeus Division for Crime Investigation and Resolution has taken over the preliminary investigation, while a disciplinary inquiry has also been ordered regarding the case.”
Dimakis gained national prominence in 2018 after going on an extended hunger strike demanding the right to attend university. He successfully gained admission to university, where he was studying political science.
