Santorini Declares State Of Emergency Amid Earthquake Activity

Authorities have declared a state of emergency on the Greek island of Santorini due to ongoing seismic activity, according to an announcement by Civil Protection Secretary General Vasilis Papageorgiou on Thursday.

The measure, which applies to the municipality of Thera, will remain in effect from February 1 to March 3, 2025, to address urgent needs and manage the consequences of the recent earthquakes shaking the island.

“We are declaring a State of Civil Protection Emergency in the Municipality of Thera, in the Thera Regional Unit of the South Aegean Region, to respond to emergency needs and handle the repercussions of the seismic activity recorded in the area in recent weeks,” the official statement read.

The state of emergency is set to automatically expire on March 3, without requiring additional action unless further measures are deemed necessary.

Santorini, a world-renowned tourist destination, sits within the active Hellenic Volcanic Arc, making it particularly susceptible to seismic events. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation while urging residents and visitors to remain vigilant.

More updates are expected as assessments continue.
