Tempe Train Crash Victim’s Family Receives First Compensation Payment

Nearly two years after the devastating Tempe train crash in Greece, the family of a railway inspector killed in the February 2023 accident has received an 800,000 euro compensation payment.

This marks the first such payout to a victim’s family. The sum, divided equally among the inspector’s wife and three children (€200,000 each for moral damages), was awarded based on the court’s finding that both the Greek rail operator OSE and private operator Hellenic Train bear responsibility for the collision due to communication and safety system failures.

While this compensation offers some solace to one family, other victims’ families await similar settlements as the legal process unfolds. An independent investigation into the disaster, which claimed 57 lives, remains ongoing and is expected to shed further light on the causes of the tragedy.
