Athens International Airport ranked among the top 10 airports in flights in the European Union last year, above Vienna and Dublin airports. In addition to seeing its passenger traffic increase significantly for 2024, its momentum is also reflected in comparison with the corresponding traffic at some of the busiest and largest airports in Europe. According to the latest Eurostat data, the ‘Eleftherios Venizelos Airport’ ranked eighth among the bloc’s 10 busiest airports, with the total number of flights last year, based on airport data, exceeding 268,000. Domestic flights increased by 5.1% and international flights by 15.5% from 2023.
Three state-owned airports, at Ioannina and on Syros and Milos, obtained certification from the Civil Aviation Authority based on the EASA criteria on Friday.
A week earlier, the state airports of Iraklio and Alexandroupoli had received the relevant certification, which concerns their compliance with the requirements of the European Union and EASA, through procedures for the proper and safe operation of the airports.
In order to ensure the smooth and safe operation of all state airports in Greece, the certification of the state airports of Kythira, Chios and Sitia will follow on February 14.
The process will be completed before the end of February, with the certification of the state airports of Karpathos and Limnos.
