Latest Storm Daniel damage estimate reaches €5 billion

Measures required to counter the effects of Storm Daniel, a deadly cyclone that struck the country in September 2023, will cost €5 billion, Deputy Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Christos Triantopoulos stated at a forum in Volos addressing the disaster.

The cyclone, which wrought devastation across the Mediterranean, causing extensive flooding in Greece, mainly in the regions of Thessaly and Central Greece, led to 15 deaths in the country.

The latest evaluation of the total repair cost greatly exceeds an initial estimate of between €1.5 and 2 billion and constitutes approximately 2.5% of the GDP in 2023, the deputy minister noted.

He pointed out that around 200,000 support requests were submitted, business tax obligations were suspended (with payments resuming in summer 2025 under a planned provision), farmers have been compensated, major infrastructure projects like dams are underway, and a new agency is launching unified water management in the region.

“This is a marathon we must run at a fast pace,” the deputy minister remarked.
