Despite numerous reforms by various governments, secondary education in Greece has yet to break free from its role as a mere “stepping stone” to universities. What truly matters is the results of the nationwide exams, not the overall performance throughout the school years. It is crucial for the education system to gain credibility, with the ultimate goal of establishing a national high school diploma. Change cannot happen overnight, but gradually, the importance of grades and promotion to the next grade level must increase. True academic performance must be recognized and valued.
