Greek Shipyard Secures Role in Sweden’s New Frigate Programme

Greek shipbuilder Salamis Shipyards has secured a new role in Sweden’s naval modernisation programme after signing an expanded industrial cooperation agreement with France’s Naval Group.

The agreement, signed on Thursday at the Euronaval 2026 international defence exhibition in Paris, will see the Greek shipyard manufacture construction blocks for the Swedish Navy’s new FDI frigates.

The deal marks another expansion of the partnership between Salamis Shipyards and Naval Group, strengthening Greece’s involvement in the international production and supply chain for the French-designed warships.

The agreement was signed by Salamis Shipyards president Georgios Koros and Naval Group Chief Procurement Officer Amandine Viala, in the presence of Naval Group chief executive Pierre Eric Pommellet.

Under the arrangement, Salamis Shipyards will produce structural blocks for the Swedish FDI programme, building on its existing work involving the construction and prefabrication of sections of the frigate hulls.

Sweden has selected the FDI design for four new Luleå-class air-defence frigates, expanding the programme’s international reach beyond Greece and France.

The agreement also extends Salamis Shipyards’ participation in the FDI programme, which already includes industrial work for the Hellenic Navy and the French Navy.

Commenting on the development, Koros highlighted the progression of the Greek shipyard’s involvement in the programme.

“We began our participation in the FDI program with the construction of sections for the Greek frigates, we extended our cooperation to the French Navy’s FDIs, and today we are taking the next step, participating in the Swedish frigate program as well,” he said.

The latest agreement further positions Salamis Shipyards as an industrial partner in a major European naval construction programme, demonstrating the growing role of Greek shipbuilding companies in international defence projects.

For Greece, the deal represents another opportunity to strengthen its domestic shipbuilding industry while expanding its participation in European defence manufacturing and naval supply chains.
