The Greek-flagged LNG carrier Maran Gas Mystras was hit by an unidentified projectile while exiting the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s main energy shipping lanes.
The Greek Ministry of Shipping said the 30-member crew, including 11 Greeks, is safe and that no injuries have been reported. Maran Gas later said the ship and crew were safe, the vessel was fully operational, and there was no report of pollution or damage affecting its operation.
Initial reports say the projectile struck near the waterline on Sunday. Smoke was seen afterward, but the ship kept propulsion and continued under its own power toward the Fujairah anchorage in the United Arab Emirates.
The Maran Gas Mystras (IMO 9658238) was built in 2015, is about 294 metres long, and has an LNG capacity of roughly 159,800 cubic metres. It is operated by Maran Gas Maritime and controlled by the Angelicoussis Shipping Group.
The origin and type of the object have not been established, and the circumstances remain under investigation. As of Monday morning the incident had not yet appeared on the International Maritime Organization’s list of confirmed Middle East shipping incidents, which was last updated on 5 October and already recorded a 4 October strike on the Greek-managed tanker Lipsi.
