When I read that the American presence in Iraq – 23 years after the invasion – ended with no fanfare, with the last Americans boarding a C-17 transport plane in the predawn hours of September 30 at an air base at Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan, my mind wondered to another withdrawal, some 35 years earlier.
