The University of Athens Senate has called on the Education Ministry to halt the implementation of Law 4957 of August 2022, which mandates expelling students exceeding the maximum study duration – or so-called eternal students.
The Senate unanimously proposed an exemption framework allowing extensions for students citing exceptional circumstances, such as health- or employment-related issues. Decisions would rest with university authorities following a thorough evaluation.
An Education Ministry official pushed back at the proposal, describing it as inconsistent with the government’s stance. Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis noted widespread public support for the law’s strict enforcement but has indicated a willingness to review select cases.
Athens University data shows 66% of overextended students are inactive, while 33% participate in academic requirements. The Senate’s suggestion aims to address this disparity and reduce unjust exclusions. However, implementing the proposal hinges on overdue internal regulations at many universities.
Amid rising student protests, the Senate stressed addressing issues, including financial and staffing deficiencies, to ensure educational fairness.
