Singer Says Concerts Delayed the Meeting That Never Came – Greek City Times

Nikos Oikonomopoulos has spoken to George Liagas on To Proino about Giorgos Mazonakis and the meeting they never had.

He said reports that he had not spoken to Mazonakis for a month and a half were being twisted.

“I was always close to George. I was never close to George and I’ve told you that before.” He meant he loved him and they talked when they met, but he was not in his inner circle. Lately he was away on concerts. They texted and agreed to meet. By the time he finished the run and came back, Mazonakis had died.

Liagas asked if a collaboration was on the table. “I don’t think he wanted to work. I think he wanted to talk to me. That’s what I feel inside.”

He refused to judge Mazonakis’s home life. “I didn’t live it. I wasn’t in it. All of us who are outsiders have a tendency to judge and say things we don’t know.” A family, he said, only wants the best for that person.

He cancelled his concert the day after Mazonakis died. “My conscience. That’s what it told me. I couldn’t sing.” They had trained together, gone to church together, seen the same elder. He would not unpack private talks on television. He accepts criticism, he said, but not claims that go past the truth.
