A new song that Giorgos Mazonakis never had the chance to record has emerged following the Greek singer’s sudden death, as his family prepares to say a final farewell to one of Greece’s most recognisable voices.
The song, titled “I Saw Christ as a Soldier”, is among the latest details to emerge as Greece mourns Mazonakis.
The singer’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief from fans, fellow artists and the wider Greek music community, with tributes continuing across Greece.
A final farewell in Nikaia
Mazonakis’ family announced that his body will be placed on public view on Sunday evening at the Holy Trinity Church in Nikaia, the church and parish he held particularly close to his heart.
The public vigil will begin at 7:30 pm on Sunday, September 13, and continue into the early hours of Monday, giving family, friends and members of the public an opportunity to pay their respects.
His funeral service will take place on Monday, September 14, at 12 noon, at the Third Cemetery of Athens, in a private family ceremony.
The family has asked those wishing to honour Mazonakis to make a donation to Humanity Greece instead of sending wreaths.
In an emotional statement, the family said they were informing the public “with a broken heart and unspeakable grief” that Mazonakis would be at his beloved church so that those who wished could say goodbye.
Investigation continues into his death
While thousands prepare to mourn the singer, the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is continuing.
Two doctors connected to the medical clinic in Kolonaki where Mazonakis sought treatment are expected to appear before an investigating magistrate on Monday.
They face allegations of exposure resulting in death, acting jointly, and had previously been granted time to prepare their statements.
Investigators are examining digital evidence, conflicting accounts over the precise times surrounding Mazonakis’ arrival at the clinic and information recorded by a plasmapheresis machine.
According to a document from a team of the Athens Medical Association, the machine’s final treatment began at 2:14 pm and lasted exactly 42 minutes.
Those details are now part of the wider investigation into the events preceding the singer’s death.
