Spanish low-cost carrier Volotea announced this week it is shutting down its hub at Athens Airport after six years of operation, while maintaining all its flights to and from Greece.
Volotea, in which Aegean Airlines acquired a stake last September, employed 80 people directly and another 450 indirectly at its Athens hub. While it is involved in Volotea’s share capital, Aegean is understood to have a distinct commercial policy.
Aegean’s local rival SKY Express issued an open invitation to the staff laid off by Volotea to submit their CVs for employment at the Iraklio-based carrier as it spreads its wings further.
In a statement, SKY Express said it is “hiring and absorbing staff from Volotea, offering new professional opportunities and securing the continued employment for tens of workers.” It added that this highlights “the dynamic growth of SKY Express as well as its intention to strengthen its role as a main player in the sector of air transport. It also stresses its commitment for supporting human resources and the further expansion of its activity in the Greek market.”
