Tap-and-ride revolution begins in the capital

[Intime News]

Athens’ public transportation is embracing a digital transformation with the launch of the “tap-and-ride” system, enabling passengers to pay for rides using bank cards or digital wallets via smartphones and smartwatches.

Starting January 15, all modes of transit under the Athens Urban Transport Organization, including buses, trolleys, the metro and trams, will offer contactless payment options. This advancement builds on the successful pilot program implemented in April 2024 on express airport bus lines.

These payments account for 9% of total transactions on those lines, highlighting the growing popularity of the EMV-Tap & Pay system. Passengers can now avoid queues at ticket machines and enjoy simplified travel, as the system automatically calculates the most cost-effective fare based on usage.

This innovation positions Athens alongside cities like Madrid, Milan and London in offering modern, convenient transit solutions. Transport officials emphasize that the integration of contactless payments contributes to smarter urban mobility and enhances accessibility.
