Mykonos continues to attract the world’s elite, with two of Europe’s tallest basketball stars turning heads on the island this week.
French center Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves was photographed strolling through the lively Matogiannia district in Mykonos Town ahead of the new NBA season. Walking alongside him was fellow Frenchman Vincent Poirier, the 2.13-metre big man recently of Anadolu Efes.
The pair, who towered over the evening crowds, spent considerable time enjoying the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the Cycladic island’s most fashionable streets.
The Players
Rudy Gobert (2.16 m) remains one of the NBA’s premier defensive forces. The four-time Defensive Player of the Year has earned four All-NBA selections, six All-Defensive Team nods and three All-Star appearances. He also led the league in blocks during the 2016-17 season.
Vincent Poirier, while never establishing himself in the NBA, built an impressive European résumé. With Real Madrid he claimed the EuroLeague title in 2023, two Spanish League championships (2022, 2024) and the Spanish Cup in 2024. In 2019, while playing for Baskonia, he finished as the EuroLeague’s top rebounder.
Poirier and Anadolu Efes mutually parted ways in June 2026 after the player suffered a serious Achilles tendon injury.
Mykonos has long been a favoured summer escape for athletes and celebrities. The appearance of two French international centers further underlines the island’s status as a global magnet during the high season.
