The Education Ministry is urgently reviewing the recent selection of an associate professor at Athens Medical School following allegations of irregularities.

The case, brought to light by a complaint from genetics professor Christos Yapijakis, has prompted direct intervention from Education Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis, with backing from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who emphasized the government’s commitment to transparency and meritocracy.

An immediate legality review was requested, focusing on the composition of the committee that recommended the chosen candidate.

Allegations include the involvement of a pediatric endocrinology professor whose expertise may not align with the advertised position in medical genetics, alongside the exclusion of more qualified academics.

The ministry warned that irregularities could nullify the election, with a new process initiated by Athens University under stricter oversight. The case underscores heightened governmental scrutiny of public sector integrity.
