As of Wednesday 22 July 2026, Greek health authorities have confirmed a total of 21 locally acquired cases of West Nile virus infection since the start of the 2026 surveillance period.
Of these:
- 20 cases presented with central nervous system (CNS) involvement, including encephalitis, meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis
- 1 case showed only mild symptoms
No deaths have been recorded so far.
Recent Increase in Cases
In the past week alone, 14 new locally acquired cases were diagnosed and reported.
One additional case involving international travel to an endemic country was also identified. The exact place of exposure remains unclear and this case is excluded from the domestic total.

Currently, 13 patients remain hospitalized.

Most infections have been recorded in Attica:
