Greece Hailed as Counterterrorism Leader and Global Example

The United States has described Greece as a “leading force” in counterterrorism and “a model for other countries”, praising its determination and effectiveness in combating far-left and anarchist terrorism.

Responding to a question from Greek newspaper Kathimerini following recent remarks by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a US State Department spokesperson highlighted the long-standing security partnership between Athens and Washington, describing it as one of the strongest in the world.

“By confronting far-left and anarchist terrorism together, Greece and the United States have built a long-standing security relationship that ranks among the strongest globally,” the spokesperson said.

The State Department added that the shared losses suffered by both countries from terrorism underscore both the seriousness of the threat and the importance of international cooperation in addressing it.

The spokesperson also praised Greece for demonstrating “great determination and effectiveness” in confronting the threat, including during periods when other governments had not fully recognised or had underestimated it.

“Greece is a leading force in counterterrorism and a model for other countries in combating this threat,” the spokesperson said.

Referring to Secretary Rubio’s comments about the terrorist group November 17, the State Department said the United States “will never forget” the diplomats and government personnel who lost their lives while serving abroad.

Rubio cited examples of far-left political terrorism in Greece, the United States and other countries to illustrate Washington’s view that terrorism remains an international threat requiring close cooperation among allies.
