A major safety alert has been issued across Europe, including Greece, for popular children’s toys known as Squeezy Dumplings or squishy dumpling toys. These soft, squeezable playthings, sold in small plastic steamer-basket-style containers with a dumpling-shaped squishy inside, are being recalled due to dangerously high levels of benzene, a known carcinogen.
The warning was published on July 17, 2026, in the European Union’s RAPEX rapid alert system by UK authorities. The specific product, a soft toy manufactured in China, fails to meet EU toy safety standards. Testing revealed excessive concentrations of benzene in the outer layer, reaching up to four times the legal limit in the UK at 20 mg/kg versus the maximum allowed of 5 mg/kg.
Benzene is a colorless, sweet-smelling chemical used in plastics and dyes. Exposure, especially among children, can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, throat, skin, and digestive tract. Long-term risks include serious health issues, as it is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen linked to leukemia and other cancers.
The product is a plastic basket-like pot containing a single soft squishy dumpling toy. Many versions circulating are counterfeits that have flooded the market after the toys went viral online. In the UK, items sold by Samsons Cash and Carry Ltd, a Cardiff-based wholesaler, triggered the recall.
Parents and caregivers should immediately stop using these toys, keep them out of children’s reach, and dispose of them safely. Contact the seller for refunds where possible. No batch numbers are typically provided, which makes identification more challenging.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns with counterfeit Chinese-made toys entering European markets. Similar squishy toys have faced scrutiny for other hazards, including risks when microwaved, a viral trend that has caused burns in some cases.
Authorities urge consumers to check for proper safety markings, such as CE certification, and to buy from reputable retailers. Genuine versions from established brands like RMS International are available at major chains, but fakes remain a widespread problem.
