Alexis Haritsis has been officially elected leader of the New Left in an unopposed contest at the party’s inaugural congress.

Haritsis, who served as interior minister and deputy economy minister in the 2015-2019 SYRIZA-Independent Greeks government, received the backing of 95.5% of the 1,257 delegates who voted in the leadership election, the conference’s electoral committee said.

The remaining votes in the unopposed contest were spoiled or blank.

The counting of votes for the election of the members of the party’s central committee continues.

New Left, which has 11 MPs, was founded a year ago after splitting from SYRIZA over irreconcilable differences with the party’s new leadership under now-ousted Stefanos Kasselakis.

In his keynote speech to the congress, Haritsis said that the party’s was opposed to the “the policy of looting and destruction.”

“We want the New Left to be the party that shakes the certainty of the rule of the powerful and paves the way for the Left,” he said.
