ATHEX: Bank stocks and mid-caps hold ground

Bank stock continued to grow at Athinon Avenue on Wednesday, but other stocks bogged the benchmark down, preventing it from registering another 13-year high after Tuesday’s record. Even the profit-taking effort by some traders proved short-lived and the favorable corporate news points to further gains in the days to come, barring any external concern.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,506.48 points, shedding less than 0.01% from Tuesday’s 1,506.61 points. The large-cap FTSE-25 index contracted 0.15%, ending at 3,672.83 points, though mid-caps expanded 0.31%.

The banks index improved 0.17%, with Alpha growing 1.44%, Piraeus fetching 0.72% and Eurobank climbing 0.51%, while National dropped 1.10% and Optima slipped 0.16%.

Jumbo parted with 2.26% and Metlen eased 2.06%, just as ElvalHalcor advanced 1.88%.

In total 42 stocks boasted gains, 51 posted losses and 27 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 160.3 million euros, down from Tuesday’s €166.5 million.

In Nicosia, the general index of the Cyprus Stock Exchange increased 0.55% to close at 220.32 points.
