A British man convicted by Greek courts of manslaughter in the 2019 death of fellow tourist Matt Jeffery on the island of Zakynthos (Zante) has been ordered extradited from the United Kingdom to serve a 12-year prison sentence.
Luke Brownsdon, who was found guilty of delivering the fatal punch outside a nightclub in Laganas, will now be sent to Greece following his arrest in Essex in April 2025 and subsequent extradition proceedings.
Jeffery, a 35-year-old father of two from Somerset, England, was on a stag do with friends when the incident occurred in May 2019. A fight broke out inside the popular Sizzle nightclub between his group and another from Essex. CCTV and mobile phone footage showed Jeffery and his friends leaving the venue, only to be followed and confronted outside.
Video evidence captured one man punching Jeffery, followed by a second blow that proved fatal. The victim’s head struck the pavement, causing severe head injuries. He was airlifted to a hospital on the Greek mainland, where he died five days later.
Greek authorities initially arrested two men from Essex in connection with the case. Brownsdon was convicted in absentia in Patras in March 2023 and sentenced to 12 years for fatal bodily harm with serious intent. His co-accused received a lesser sentence that was later suspended on appeal.
Neither man attended the trial, and both returned to the UK shortly after the incident. Sky News investigations highlighted significant delays in the Greek justice process and raised questions about the identification of suspects, including potential misidentification of one attacker.
The case has drawn attention to issues surrounding violence in popular tourist destinations like Zakynthos, as well as challenges in cross-border extradition between Greece and the UK. Jeffery’s family has campaigned for years for justice, including covering legal costs to participate in Greek proceedings.
Brownsdon’s extradition marks a significant step forward for the victim’s loved ones after more than six years.
