United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will visit Cyprus from July 27 to 29 as part of ongoing UN efforts to support the peace process on the divided island.
The announcement was made by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric during a press briefing at UN headquarters in New York.
Dujarric said the visit forms part of the Secretary-General’s Good Offices Mission and reflects his “strong, practical commitment to the Cyprus issue.”
During his stay, Guterres is expected to hold separate meetings with the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, as well as other key stakeholders involved in the peace process.
According to the UN, discussions will focus on advancing efforts toward a comprehensive settlement and strengthening stability on the island. The talks will also include the role of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), which has maintained a presence in the buffer zone since 1964.
The UN said further details of the Secretary-General’s programme will be released closer to the visit.
The visit comes as the United Nations continues to encourage dialogue between the two sides following recent diplomatic efforts aimed at creating conditions for renewed negotiations on the Cyprus issue.
