Seasonal firefighters remain a crucial part of Greece’s wildfire response system, protecting forests, properties and human lives every summer. However, outside the fire season, thousands say they face unfair treatment and uncertainty.
A recent recruitment announcement for firefighters has renewed concerns among seasonal firefighters, as an age limit continues to prevent many experienced workers from applying.
“The age limit of 30 years acts as a barrier, leaving 2,000 out of the 2,500 seasonal firefighters excluded,” said Giorgos Tzelepis, president of the Seasonal Firefighters Association.
Firefighters argue that their experience represents valuable operational knowledge gained directly from battling wildfires.
“This is experience that must not be lost. It has been gained on the front lines. We staff the vehicles, we are the first to arrive at fire scenes and the last to leave,” Tzelepis said.
Authorities and experts have also warned that the role of seasonal firefighters remains important beyond the traditional eight-month period when they serve.
“Official studies, including research from the National Observatory of Athens, show that fires outside the traditional wildfire season have doubled. This is why we are asking to work throughout the year,” Tzelepis added.
The current system has created significant financial pressure for thousands of seasonal firefighters, who say they struggle during the months when they are not employed.
Some firefighters have also faced confrontations with police forces during protests over their demands.
Seasonal firefighters have submitted their requests to the Greek government and have warned that they may organise further mobilisations if their concerns remain unresolved.
