Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, whose powerful, raspy voice made “Total Eclipse of the Heart” one of the defining ballads of the 1980s, has died at the age of 75.
Tyler died unexpectedly in a hospital in Portugal, where she had been receiving treatment for an illness, her family confirmed in a statement released on Thursday.
She had been admitted to hospital in Faro in May for emergency intestinal surgery and was placed in an induced coma. Although reports last month suggested she was recovering well and expected to make a full recovery, her family said she passed away unexpectedly.
“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,” the statement said.
A voice that defined an era
Born in Wales, Tyler rose to international fame in 1983 with “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” the dramatic power ballad written and produced by Jim Steinman.
The song topped charts around the world, spending four weeks at No. 1 in the United States, and has since surpassed one billion streams, enjoying renewed popularity during the solar eclipses of 2017 and 2024.
Her distinctive voice and theatrical performances earned her three Grammy Award nominations and established her as one of Britain’s most recognisable pop stars.
Eurovision and royal honour
Tyler represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 with the song Believe in Me, finishing 19th.
In 2022, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of her services to music.
