A Thessaloniki court for offenders caught in the act on Friday handed a man an 18-month suspended prison sentence for espionage after he was caught photographing the city’s military airport on December 23.

The sentence was converted to a fine of 10 euros per day, while he was also fined an additional 1,000 euros. He was acquitted of a charge of entering a forbidden zone.

In court, the suspect claimed he did know it was forbidden to take pictures in the area.

The 31-year-old, a Greek national with Ukrainian descent, had been spotted by police taking photographs of the airport facilities from the Thessaloniki-Perea highway using a telephoto lens.

Police later found he had even captured warning signs banning photography in the area.
