In the heart of Athens, on Patission Street, Casa d’Italia stands as a resonant testament to Italian culture and history.
Built in the 1930s, the building houses the Italian Cultural Institute and encapsulates the spirit of interwar diplomacy and architectural ambition.
Now, a new exhibition of photographs and artifacts invites visitors to explore its storied past. Frescoes in the Greco-Roman aesthetic by German painter Georg Alexander Mathey line the entrance, whispering of a turbulent era when ideology and art intertwined.
Inside, rooms like the library tell of a long-standing cultural bond. Director Francesco Neri, fluent in Greek, speaks of revitalizing Italy’s cultural role in Athens. Meanwhile, Casa d’Italia, restored and modernized, embodies both legacy and renewal.
The building once served as a hub for education and diplomacy during Italy’s Mare Nostrum period and weathered war and confiscation.
The exhibition, open through month’s end, is a meditation on history, art, and cultural convergence.
