Olympiakos has got the upper hand in the battle for Greece’s second ticket to next season’s Champions League qualifiers, after beating Panathinaikos in Pireaus while PAOK drew at home with Super League champion AEK on Wednesday.
The Reds defeated Panathinaikos 1-0, completely dominating the season’s last Derby of the Eternal Rivals, at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium.
Brazilian winger Rodinei scored for the Piraeus team in first-half injury time, putting Olympiakos two points ahead of third-placed PAOK.
The Thessaloniki club grabbed a late equalizer against AEK in Toumba to avoid defeat, with the final 1-1 score being rather flattering for the hosts.
Substitute Luka Jovic put AEK in front, but another supersub, Anestis Mythou, drew PAOK level two minutes from the end.
AEK is on 71 points, Olympiakos has 65, PAOK reached 63 and Panathinaikos stayed on 51. In the final round of games, this Sunday, Olympiakos visits AEK and PAOK travels to Panathinaikos.
In the 5-8 playoffs Levadiakos saw off OFI Crete 3-2 at home and Aris downed Vilos 2-1 away.
Asteras Tripolis took a leap to safety with a 1-0 home win in the six-pointer against Panserraikos on Tuesday and is one win away from safety, with Panserraikos likely joining Larissa on the way down. The latter drew 1-1 at Panetolikos, while Atromitos won 3-0 at Kifissia, in the rest of the play-outs.
