New wave of Saharan dust expected as of Monday

Concentrations of Saharan dust are expected to subside on Sunday but a new wave is expected to affect various regions of Greece as of Monday, according to AtmoHub, the country’s information hub for atmospheric composition.

The hub said air quality near ground level in Crete, particularly in Chania, was poor on Saturday, with particulate matter concentrations exceeding 100 μg/m³.

The regions expected to be most affected next week are Crete, the Peloponnese, Attica, Central Greece, Western Greece, Epirus and Thessaly.

“The deterioration in air quality is expected to persist through Tuesday, and there is a possibility that the phenomenon will continue in the coming days,” AtmoHub said.

The forecast and development of the phenomenon, based on data from the CAMS Atmospheric Monitoring Service, can be monitored on the AtmoHub web portal.
