Two checkpoints will start operating at the Athens Court of First Instance on Monday as part of an effort to boost security, in response to an armed attack that injured five employees last month.
The checkpoints will be set up at the entrances on Loukareos and Degleri Streets, while all other entry points will be closed, the President of the Three-Member Council of the Court, Christoforos Linos, told lawyers in an announcement sent to them on Saturday.
To avoid delays, the checkpoint on Degleri Street will be used solely by lawyers and judicial officials while they will have priority at the second one, the announcement said.
On April 28, an 89-year-old gunman entered the court building and wounded four judicial staff. The suspect had previously barged into a social security office with a shotgun and injured another civil servant. He was charged with several counts of attempted murder, illegal firearms use in a courthouse, illegal weapons possession, threatening to commit crimes and other firearms violations.
