Crete murder suspect remanded in custody over revenge killing

[InTime News]

A 54-year-old man who confessed to fatally shooting a 21-year-old driver in Crete in an act of revenge has been remanded in custody following testimony before an investigating magistrate.

The suspect is charged with ambushing the victim in his car on Tuesday near Iraklio and shooting him dead before later surrendering to police. He will be transferred to a prison outside the island.

The man’s 56-year-old wife, who was present during the shooting, was also remanded in custody. The hearing took place at police headquarters in Iraklio under heightened security measures and earlier than originally scheduled.

Speaking on Friday, a lawyer representing the victim’s family described the killing as a “premeditated execution,” alleging the suspect also insulted and assaulted the victim’s body after the shooting.

The victim’s funeral took place on Thursday.

Defense lawyers said the accused gave lengthy testimony while under severe emotional strain. According to the defense, the suspect held the victim responsible for the 2023 car crash that killed his 17-year-old son after 19 days in hospital. The victim, who had been driving the vehicle, survived the crash.
