The Justice Ministry will submit a provision to Parliament on Friday aimed at giving absolute priority to court cases involving political figures, including lawmakers linked to the OPEKEPE farm subsidy investigation.

The amendment, introduced by Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis, will have retroactive effect and shorten procedural deadlines for misdemeanors and felonies.

Under the proposal, misdemeanor cases would go directly to trial after prosecution and be scheduled within three months.

Felony investigations would follow Article 28 of the Criminal Procedure Code, be assigned to an appellate investigating judge and conclude within four months, followed by an irrevocable judicial council ruling and a trial date within three months.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced the initiative in Parliament in April and Floridis later presented it to European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kovesi during her visit to Greece.

The proposal follows the OPEKEPE case and the investigated involvement of New Democracy lawmakers. The ministry said the regulation restores elements of a framework established under earlier legislation.
