The Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Ministry has launched the 2026 wildfire prevention season, warning members of the public of four key prohibitions aimed at reducing human-caused fires.
Burning vegetation waste and open fires are banned outright regardless of risk level. Spark-producing or open-flame work, fireworks and beekeeping smoke are prohibited when the danger index reaches high, very high, or alarm levels.
Violations carry administrative fines up to €50,000. Under the new Penal Code, arson is punishable by imprisonment and fines up to €200,000, with no suspension or commutation. “Prevention is everyone’s obligation,” the ministry stated.
